X - X'mas ~ A-Z Blogger Challenge 2014
The chill winds bring in a freshness, a freshness with a positive vibe. The
snow flakes brush the skin softly as they touch the ground. The ringing of the
bells, the beautiful notes of the carols being sung and played, the colorful wreaths
on the door, the socks hanging over the fireplace and the hope that good will
prevail over the evil, bringing with it a lot of joy and prosperity, says a lot
about the season of X’mas.
Having studied in a Convent, I had the privilege of knowing
and celebrating this beautiful festival X’mas. But I always wondered why
Christmas is popularly referred to as X’mas. As I googled, I got some
interesting explanation from Wikipedia. It is believed that Christ was often referred to as ‘Xp’ or ‘Xt’ which are asserted from references in Anglo Saxon Chronicles.
The ‘X’ and ‘P’ were the uppercase forms of letters χ (Ch)
and ρ (R)
in Greek. And in Greek, Christ is spelled as Χριστος.
Interesting, isn't it? If you have any inputs, do share!!
